The association with eggs came first from Easter Europe. People, particularly Catholics and Orthodox, used to give up eating meat and eggs for Lent, the 6 weeks before Eastre so eggs became a symbol of ending the fast, of celebration.

The ';rabbit'; was originally a European hare and the idea of a hare bringing, or laying, eggs comes from Germany. Hares do not make burrows but raise their young in nests which they make in the fields,. These look a bit like some bird's nests - the plover particularly. This in turn lead to a children's tease that hares , like birds, actually do lay eggs so, if you make a nest (these days, a basket), hare might come and lay a special egg in it.How come Easter has something to do with rabbit and eggs when its about when god rose from the dead?
The european Pre-Christian celebration of Ostara celebrated the re-birth of the earth at springtime using eggs and rabbits as the main fertility symbols.

When the Christians moved into Europe and began converting everyone, they adapted the local customs and rites to fit in with Christian ones in order to make it easier for the people to accept the 'new' religion
Secular Christians!
